Just when you thought my blog was only about weddings, people and my life. Well, it still is, but I guess I’m lurking on the side of other things now. One being this darn, pain in the, beautiful piece of machinery I call my Apple PowerBook G4. If this is the first time you are joining me on my blog, well I have had the worst experience with it. I’ll just review now, so if you know the story you can go to the next part. About 2 months ago my cooling fans on my PowerBook started making funny noises. I suspected that they were broken because every single time my computer would get hot, the noise just turned on. No problem, I figure I’ll just bring it to Apple to repair. I brought it in and they needed to order parts, which meant I would have to wait 3 days for the parts to arrive. Shortly after the parts arrived they needed an additional 2 days to repair it. Then I get the call. The parts they received from Apple were defective, meaning that now my poor laptop was on a plane to Texas to get repaired in the main servicing center. 5 days go by and they tell me it’s ready. I go pick it up and they tell me that they need to change the mother board too because something was going on with it. On top of all that, they formated my hard drive. Still wonder why they did that, but luckily I never keep anything on my hard drive that is important. I have it all backed up on an external drive which I recommend to anyone out there.
So great it all works, so I slowly pieced back every application that I need back to my laptop. Oh which by the way, if you have Leopard, you can use the Time Machine feature to backup your entire mac, applications and all, which I do now. 1 month goes by with no problems, then, it happened. On a reboot, my computer couldn’t find the hard drive. I’m thinking great! just great! So I tried to reinstall the operating system 1 more time. It worked fine after, but then as time went by, it kept happening. It couldn’t find the hard drive. And this takes us to our present day. Yes, the hard drive failed after 3 long glorious trouble free years.
Now you’re asking, did I take it to Apple to fix? Well it has no more warranty, so heck NO! I did some research and found that yes people, you can fix your mac for a lot less and do it right! To make a long story short, I changed the hard drive just yesterday and everything looks like it’s working great not to mention it only cost me $60 to fix! And that is the price of my new hard drive. Oh and I also got some new tools out of this whole ordeal. Yes, us guys love our tools!
Here is the link to how to fix your mac, it so great because it tells you which tools you will need and it gives a picture diagram. FIX YOUR MAC. Do I recommend you to try it? Do it at your own risk! I say if it has a warranty that’s a no brainer, bring it back to Apple. If you’re daring enough and you want to save money, I say try it. What else do you have to loose.
Here is some photos from yesterdays adventure. Check out my new tools and look at the surprise that the Apple Repair Center left in my PowerBook. Yes, that’s pieces of metal! I’m not sure why it’s just floating around in there, but it could have caused some serious damage, which maybe it did.
