BRIAN AND JACKIE : TRADITIONAL VIETNAMESE ENGAGEMENT CEREMONY

This past Sunday, Brian and Jackie became offically engaged! If you’re not familiar with the traditional Vietnamese engagement ceremony, then you’re in for a treat! This ceremony is important in Vietnamese traditions. It’s a time for both families to meet and have the blessings from the brides (Jackie’s) parents, giving the approval for their daughter to marry the groom (Brian). This is also when she officially gets to wear the engagement ring. Out of all of the Vietnamese engagement cermonies I’ve whitnessed, I would have to put this on the top of my list as the most emotional. Yes, Helen and I nearly lost it during the ceremony, we’ll admit that.

I must warn you there will be a lot of photos. I really wanted to highlight the complete event for those that have never seen it. Brian and Jackie, we’re so honored to be a part of your engagement ceremony, as well as your wedding next year!

Brian and his family waited outside to be brought into the house.

All of the offerings were brought into the house.
And presented.
After the introductions to both sides of the family, they finally brought Jackie out.

A quick prayer.

And presenting of the engagement ring.
When Jackie’s friend Clarie sang “Forever” accapella, everyone at that point lost it, including us. It was so touching!

Brian’s mom giving Jackie some shinny bling.  It’s part of the tradition that both parents offer a gift of jewlery.  I hope that’s right.
Jackie’s very proud parents.
It was a great day and who wouldn’t love Jackie’s smile!

We did some quick portraits of course.

It was also Father’s day that day, which made the event even more special!

Jackie don’t hate me for posting these, but your smile and laughter is so great!

ANDREW & RACHEE : A BICYCLE ENGAGEMENT SESSION IN LONG BEACH

Last week, I photographed Rachee and Andrew’s engagement session down in Long Beach. I must say, it was a nice surprise when they both showed up with bicycles! It was perfect though in every way. I am looking forward to their wedding coming up in July of this year. Here are some fun photos from their session.

it’s been a long time since I rocked some flare, so I thought I might as well bring it back.
it’s not as easy as it looks to ride a bike, not run into anything and still look this good!

a little more fun on the bicycles.
we stopped by a mini dock and a mini beach for some more photos.

these two photos are my favorites!

JAMES & CHING : A HARVARD ENGAGEMENT

If there was one city that I had a choice to live in and where cold isn’t a factor, my first pick would be Boston. There is just something about the city that draws you in. Maybe it’s from the charming neighborhoods or that everyone there is so nice or maybe because they have public transportation and for most, they just walk. Whatever the case may be, for James & Ching, this is the place where James proposed to Ching, well, Harvard to be exact. These two live at Harvard, but are having their wedding in LA this summer, which I can’t wait for! I met James & Ching over Skype, which was the only way we could have all chatted face to face. Thank goodness for technology! During the session at Harvard, we had a great time learning about the campus and more importantly, walking the steps they walked, the places they studied at and ate at, which made this session even more special! James & Ching, thank you for being such great tour guides on our trip to Harvard and for treating us to some outstanding Afghanistan food!

Biking or riding the “T” is the only way to go!

This was not a planned shot.  Ching’s feet just hurt walking, so James just carried her around.

JOHN & SALLY ENGAGED : HARTFORD CONNECTICUT

It was so great to be back in my home town last week. Despite the crazy weather there and a busy agenda, it certainly didn’t hinder our visit one bit. I was so excited to hear from Sally back in December, that she had gotten engaged! Sally is getting married to John sometime next year and I couldn’t be more happy for the two of them. I could tell just by spending a few hours with them, that John deeply adores Sally by the way he looks at her and Sally is crazy about John by the Eskimo kisses she gives him. We were interrupted briefly by a passing shower, but nothing a few Nutmeggers couldn’t handle. That’s what they call us Connecticut folks. We walked around downtown Hartford for most of the day, shooting and having fun. Sally and John, we had such a great time hanging out with you guys in Connecticut. I hope you both enjoy the photos and call me when you set the date!

There is so much character in downtown Hartford, including these large wooden doors and metal lanterns in front of the bar.

MICHAEL & STACEY ENGAGED

Maybe I’m speaking for myself here, but as a former single guy, the only thing I ever asked for on my birthday, was for my best friend to bring my future wife to my birthday party. Was that to much to ask for? Ok so that never worked out for me and I’m glad! But for Michael, ask and you shall receive! Michael’s friend was dating Stacey’s friend and to make a long story short, they met at Michael’s birthday party through their friends and the rest is history.

This past weekend, I headed up to LA to meet up with Michael and Stacey. The day was perfect! Great weather in LA, non-crowded streets and extra daylight! What more can a photographer ask for? Besides hanging out with such a fun and down to earth couple of course. Their wedding will be in LA in May and I’m looking forward to it. Thanks again guys for the food experience at The Farmers Market and giving us a tour of LA.

this little puppy stopped by to say hi and wanted his picture taken apparently

FAQ : ENGAGEMENT SESSION

I often get asked by my clients, what is an engagement session and more importantly what is my approach to it. And that is why I have made a short clip about the engagement session, to help answer some of those questions.

What I want to add also which I didn’t mention in the short clip, is that it’s a great chance for us to get to know each other better. And that’s really important because come day of your wedding, you’ll know what to expect and not to mention you’ll be more comfortable in front of the camera. What I want to give my clients, is a sense that a friend is shooting photos for them. Just a day to cut loose, have fun and be your selfs. At the same time finding that great lighting and making some beautiful photos.

I want to give a special thanks to Vinh & Janet for being such a fun loving couple! Click HERE if you would like to see more photos from their session. Feel free also to leave me comments or questions.

BRIAN & ANNIE ENGAGED

Yes I know, I’ve been such a bad blogger lately. But I hope I can make it up with this post. Annie & Brian, I can’t even begin to describe how cool and fun these two are, so I won’t. I’m sure the people that know them will sure agree with me though. This past weekend we shot their engagement session at not 1 or 2, but 3 locations! I think it’s always a great idea to switch it up and shoot at different places, especially if they have special meaning. We started the day at Angels Stadium with a special private tour. Unfortunately there was a game on the field and we couldn’t get on the field, but we still had fun. We then headed back to their old high school, where again we were denied access to where they wanted to shoot. I sure didn’t feel like hoping a fence and getting arrested since the police station was across the street, so we just stayed in front. We finished the day at Old Towne Orange, which kinda felt like my old home town.  Here are just a few of my favorites from their session and I can’t wait to shoot their wedding next year!  Thanks again guys for the wine!

Something just told me it was going to be a great day!

They were actually allowed to sit on the promotional Corona chairs!

Brian was warming up a bit before the shoot.

There’s something so special about two people in an empty stadium.

This was pretty much as close as we could get to the field and almost got hit by a ball!

Annie’s hair and makeup was so excellent that day and it was done by the talented JAC Beauty.

These were taken at their old high school in some beautiful light!

Annie workin’ it! and Brian trying to be the center of attention.

I found this cool little spot while walking in Old Towne Orange. That place has so much character!

This photo reminds me of walks in NY.

There was some serious fun, laughs and modeling that day!

SHOOTING FOR FUN

Now that the wedding season is winding down, I look for any opportunity to shoot for fun. It’s even better when you get to shoot a fun happy couple. This past Friday I was invited by Matt to shoot one of his couples, for their engagement session. We headed down to a small beach in Laguna for their session. I really wanted to take more risks this shoot and shoot as wide open as I can and at ISO’s I couldn’t shoot normally. The whole idea is to really push the limits of the camera and myself at the same time. Thanks again Matt for inviting me out.

It’s all fun and games until you take a tumble head first to the sand.

This is where I wanted to see the difference. We completely lost the light at this point. There was a faint sunset light remaining. Here are the specs on these shots.
(left) 50mm, F/1.4, ISO 1600, 1/40 (right) 50mm, F/1.4, ISO 3200, 1/50
You be the judge on how much more grain there is.

I tried a semi-long exposure shot. This was shot at 28mm, F/4, ISO 400, 4 second shutter. I placed the camera on a brick wall and did a timer shot. Again it was pretty much dark at this point.
